Hello and Surprise!

Sorry we didn't get this message to you yesterday, but we were soooo busy getting the newsletter ready, preparing for this weekend's retreat and getting Sunday's final "Cultivating Fruitfulness" program ready, that time just got away from us!  Since the November Rod and Staff newsletter will be at church on Sunday, this is a short version of  "What's Happening". . . . . .

Can you help?  We have had a request from Emma Miller for someone to move furniture and clean her carpet.  In addition, Emma would like to attend church, but needs a ride to do so. If you are able to provide a ride for Emma and her caretaker, please call Pastor's cell phone (815-355-2397) and she'll give you details.  Thanks for helping to serve our sister in Christ!

Recap from last Sunday:    Last Sunday, we talked about "Risk-Taking Mission and Service." We talked about The Golden Rule, loving ourselves and our neighbors, Matthew 25, Micah 6:8, and living our lives in a way that matters. Pastor Suzanne showed us the video to TobyMac's song, "Lose My Soul," and she challenged us with Bishop Robert Schnase's own words from Day 28 in our book, "What are we asking God to do for us and others that God has created us to do for God?" Have you been thinking about this???

Preview of this Sunday: This Sunday, we'll conclude our study of "Cultivating Fruitfulness" by looking at "Extravagant Generosity." Yep, we'll be talking about money and how what we have and how we spend reflects more than we know or even like to think about.

My cookie dough is at home waiting for me to bake up a few batches.  If you would like to get some for yourself, there are a few extras available.  Call the Preschool (815-886-4356) to arrange to get yours.  Remember to get your Rod and Staff in church on Sunday.  Here's wishing everyone the blessings of peace, hope, faith, joy, health, love and sunshine!  Have a wonderful weekend.

WHAT'S HAPPENING AT GOOD SHEPHERD CORRECTIONS

Good Morning!

We just wanted to update/correct yesterday's "What's Happening" report.  Please note the following:
  • The Long Range Planning team does not have a meeting tomorrow--they got together last Sunday to take care of business
  • There will be Wednesday Bible Study on October 26 at 6:30pm--it was inadvertently omitted
  • Helpers at Halloween Fest tonight are asked to park in the west parking lot of the Rec center
Sorry for the confusion!  Have a great weekend.

WHAT'S HAPPENING AT GOOD SHEPHERD CHURCH

Hello!

Fall is really providing us with blustery days.  Can't wait to get my cookie dough order on Wednesday and bake up a few batches.  Remember to pick up your order Wednesday between 3 and 6pm at the Preschool.

It is once again newsletter time!  Please be sure to send your reports in to me tomorrow so I can have the November Rod and Staff ready for everyone to get in church on October 30th!

Here is this week's "What's Happening". . . . . .

1.      Fri. Oct. 21-Romeoville Halloween Fest.  Come and greet the Romeoville children at the Chamber of Commerce and Rec Center Halloween Fest.  Our church/preschool will be sponsoring the craft area from 6-9 pm.  Anyone can come and help us--the more the merrier!  They have asked us to try to get there by 5:15 -5:45 to get our table assignment and instructions.  You don't have to come for the entire time, any time would be great at the Good Shepherd booth.  (NOTE:  The Friday Study will not meet tonight)

2.       Sat. Oct. 22-Shepherd's Food Pantry will be open from 9:30 to 11:30am at 2 Belmont Drive

3.      Sat. Oct. 22-Long Range Planning Committee will meet at 1pm

9.      Sun. Oct. 30-Our Youth Group (6th grade to high school) is going to the movies!

10.  Mon. Oct. 31-Is a school non-attendance day and the Preschool will be closed

Adult Retreat Reminder:  Please sign up by this Sunday to let us know if you'll be coming to the Adult Retreat.  We need to plan our meals based on how many are coming, and we think this will be a great opportunity for people to get a taste of what a retreat is like.  It is being held at the home of Paul/Debbie Suchomel next Friday, October 28 from 6-10pm and Saturday, October 29 from 8:30am-3:30pm.  We hope you'll make every effort to join us, and bring a friend as well.  Pastor Suzanne will be pulling in some of our themes from the "Cultivating Fruitfulness" program during the retreat.  Please note that this retreat is for adults only (confirmed youth are welcome).  We regret that no childcare will be available.

Recap from last Sunday:   As we continued on our "Cultivating Fruitfulness" journey, we gathered one-on-one to talk about our faith journeys.  Our theme this week was "Intentional Faith Development."  We shared how we have deepened our faith, how small groups have affected our journeys, and how we can strengthen our church's faith development together.  Pastor Suzanne shared how important it is for us to be in community as we are intentionally developing our faith.  We cannot do it on our own; we need each other.  She encouraged us to look at the challenges from Week 3 and decide what our own challenge might be.

Preview of this Sunday:  We'll continue the "Cultivating Fruitfulness" journey looking at "Risk-Taking Mission and Service."  We'll have the opportunity to think about how we, as individuals, have served others, sharing the love of Jesus.  And, we'll talk about how our congregation has been the hands and feet of God, serving the least among us.  We hope you'll join us as we think about what it means to be the body of Christ

An important note about Sunday programming:  If you haven't had a chance to be with us yet in October, PLEASE know that you can come at any time.  Even though you may feel like you've missed a week or two, you can still get something out of it-- we know you will!  So, if you still don't have the book, we ordered a few more and we'd love to get one to you.  Please let Pastor Suzanne know via email or text and she will do her best to get it to you before or on Sunday.  Thanks!

Remember to get your Rod and Staff information to me by tomorrow.  It will be greatly appreciated!  Here's wishing everyone the blessings of peace, hope, faith, joy, health, love and warmth!  Hope to see you at the Rec Center tomorrow evening.

MATTHEW 25:35 FUND (formerly the Social Ministry Discretionary Fund) is used to assist those in need, both in our congregation and those in the larger community.  In the past we've assisted with utility bills, prescriptions, fuel for cars, etc.  The name changed to Matthew 25:35 fund so it more clearly represented what the fund is for; "For I was hungry, and fed me.  I was thirsty, and you gave me drink.  I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home."   We recently learned of one of our own families being in need and are trying to raise as much as possible to assist in buying a furnace.  As we quickly approach colder temperatures, hopefully we can all come together to assist this family.  If you feel inclined to give to give to this family and/or the Matthew 25:35 Fund, please put your gift in an envelope clearly marked Matthew 25:35 Fund, and the monies collected will be given to this family and others in need.  Also, if you know of someone in our congregation (including yourself) in need of something, please let Pastor know.  It will be held in confidence and we'll seek resources whenever and wherever possible, starting right here within our church family.

Adult Retreat:  Pastor Suzanne will be leading a retreat for adults on Friday, October 28 and Saturday, October 29.  The Suchomel's will be hosting the retreat.  A sign-up will be available on Sunday and we hope you'll make every effort to join us.  The retreat times will be from 6-10p on Friday and 8:30a-3:30p on Saturday.  Meals will be provided on Friday evening (dinner) and Saturday (breakfast and lunch).  There will be a small fee requested to cover these costs.  Retreats are a great way to connect intimately with God and others on our journeys with Jesus.  Join us!  And invite a friend!

Recap from last Sunday:  Last week, as we continued our "Cultivating Fruitfulness" theme, we discussed "Passionate Worship," looking at the various Biblical references from our daily readings.  Pastor challenged us to think about what it means to worship together and how important worship is in the life of our church and in our personal journeys with Jesus.  Haven't been to worship lately?  Why not let this be the week that you come back?  You are missed and our worship is enhanced when ALL our church family is with us.

Preview of this Sunday:  As we continue sharing readings from the "Cultivating Fruitfulness" book, we'll be discussing "Intentional Faith Development."  We'll have the opportunity to think about why growing in our faith, intentionally, is so important to our journeys with Jesus.  We'll talk about why small groups and Bible studies are a great way to walk together in our faith development.  And, we'll use Jesus' time on earth with the disciples as our own example as to how we should be growing and maturing in our personal journeys with Jesus.  We hope you'll join us.  We have something different in mind for our "small group" time this week, so don't miss a week!!!

An important note about this Sunday's programming:  If you haven't had a chance to be with us yet in October, PLEASE know that you can come at any time.  Even though you may feel like you've missed a week or two, you can still get something out of it...and we know you will!  So, if you still don't have the book, we ordered a few more and we'd love to get one to you.  Please let Pastor Suzanne know via email or text and she will do her best to get it to you before or on Sunday.  Thanks!

Here's wishing everyone the blessings of peace, hope, faith, joy, health and love!

Reminders about October worship:

During the month of October, we will be offering one service at 9:30am.  Announcements begin at 9:15am each week.  We are on a special journey together and it's the hope that everyone will do their best to be present with us each Sunday in October.  Bring your "Cultivating Fruitfulness" books, Bibles and a pen...you'll need them.  If you haven't gotten the book yet, let us know and we'll see that you get a copy.  Also remember that recordings of our worship services are available to anyone who wants to keep up with the journey.

We were certainly blessed with a beautiful day Sunday for the tree planting/blessing at our former church site.  If you weren't able to be there, you can see it on Facebook.

Recap from last Sunday:  We began our journey of "Cultivating Fruitfulness."  Focusing on "Radical Hospitality," Pastor shared the various Scripture verses from the book and dug a little deeper into what the verses mean for us as we think about radically welcoming people into our church.  How are your daily challenges going?

Preview of this Sunday:  This week, we will be focusing on "Passionate Worship."  We hope you'll have read through Day 14 and that you've been keeping up with your daily challenges.  Be ready to talk about what worship means to you; why you come to worship; what you like about our worship styles; how we can worship God together.  It's sure to generate a lot of good discussion.

I trust that you are all enjoying out bit of Indian summer weather!  What a great day it will be for the CROP Walk on Saturday.  Our team is so close to their goal.  Please consider supporting this ministry in some small way if you haven't already done so.

FYI-Since Monday is Columbus Day, the Preschool will be closed and I will not be in the office.  We are currently experiencing problems with our answering machine.  If it will not allow you to leave a message, please call Pastor's cell phone (815-355-2397) and leave your message there.

Here's wishing everyone the blessings of peace, hope, faith, joy, health and love!
