Reaching Pastor Suzanne

Pastor Suzanne is currently without a cell phone.  If you need to reach her for an emergency only, please text her daughter, Courtney, at 815-608-5300.  Please DO NOT text this number unless it is an emergency.

As soon as Pastor's phone has been replaced, we will send another email to let you know.

As a reminder, Renea, our Pastoral Assistant is on vacation this week and not in the office.  However, Pastor Suzanne will be checking messages as she stops in the office on Thursday and Friday.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Crafter's Nights will be continuing with our first one in January being on January 10 at 7pm at the church.  Is there a craft you want to share and enjoy with others?  Bring it to the church on Crafter's Night and enjoy some fellowship with other crafters.  If you're interested in learning the art of scrapbooking, Carrie Worthington would be glad to get you started!

Can Tabs Needed!  We are helping children at Irene King Elementary School reach their goal of collecting 1,000 pounds of tabs from all sorts of canned beverage, soup, vegetable, and pet food  for the Ronald McDonald Children's Home, so they can have their school's name placed on a leaf plaque inside one of the "local" house.  Feel free to take cardboard Ronald McDonald collection boxes/houses, fill them up and bring them back to church.  We'll then get the tabs collected to Irene King.  Tell all of your friends, family and co-workers to save them too!  Thanks!

Our Preschool is on their Christmas Break until Monday, January 6, 2014.  Also, this Pastoral Assistant will not be in the office from December 30th until January 6, 2014, so this is my last What's Happening report for 2013.  I want to thank you all for your kindness, caring and friendship.  This is the most pleasant job I've ever had, thanks to all of you, and I'm looking forward to our sharing 2014 with joy, peace, hope, faith, love, grace and health!

TONIGHT-Thur. Dec 19-FLY Lady (Finally Loving Yourself) will meet at 7pm for their annual Christmas party, with guests bringing either an appetizer or a dessert as well as a gift wrapped "White Elephant". This is a good time for those curious about FLY Lady to come see how much fun it is to be organized. All are welcome to join the fun!

Sun. Dec 22-"Light in the Darkness" Christmas Service will be held at 4pm

Tue. Dec 24-Christmas Eve Candlelight Worship at 7pm & 11pm (see details below)

Fri. Dec. 27-Friday Study will meet at 7pm at the home of Laura Voruz

Sun. Dec. 29-One Worship Service will be held at 9am and followed by Connection Café

Fri. Jan 3-Friday Study meets at 7pm at the home of Laura Voruz

Sun. Jan. 5-One Worship Service at 9am, followed by a Budget Forum Meeting

Mon. Jan. 6-Reports for the Annual Meeting folders are due to the office today

"Light in the Darkness" Christmas Service will be held December 22 at 4pm. This service is designed for those who have lost loved ones or for whom this holiday season is difficult due to loneliness, depression, etc. If you know someone who might benefit from this service, please invite them to join you in attending—your support will mean a lot to them. Questions? Please contact Pastor Suzanne.

Christmas Eve Worship plans include two traditional candlelight services at 7pm and 11pm with Holy Communion offered at both services. We will offer a special time for children (and adults?) at the end of our 7pm service and we invite the kids to come in their pajamas.  Please remember that the parking lot fills up quickly but you can also use the parking lot at Anderson Memorial Chapel across from the church.

Matthew 25 Fund update – we were blessed to receive a donation of $1,000 toward this fund but we are still looking for donations to help two families in need.  If you have a little extra to give at this time of year, please consider donating to this fund.

Cottage Meetings – The Church Council will be hosting three cottage meetings in January.  The purpose of these meetings is to offer a smaller, more informal setting for discussions on the embezzlement case, as well as other issues facing the church.  The meetings will offered on Wednesday, January 8 from 7-8:30pm; Saturday, January 11 from 1-2:30pm; and on Sunday, January 12 from 11am-12:30pm.  We invite you to attend one of these meetings and ask that you please sign up starting this Sunday.  We want to keep the groups under 15 people for each session, is possible.  Questions?  Please contact a Church Council member: Judy Jordan, Ronn Young-Black, Carrie Worthington, or Pastor Suzanne.

New Procedures – The Church Council is working on new policies and procedures and has set a new procedure for check requests and/or reimbursements.  Check request forms will be available at the church on Sunday mornings and need to be filled out and then signed by a Council member before submitting them to the church treasurer.  In addition, the form must include both the original receipt, along with a copy, for the church records.  If you have any questions about this, please contact a Church Council member.

Weapons Policy – The Church Council has issued a new policy regarding the possession of weapons on church property.  Effective 11/19/2013, Good Shepherd Church is instituting a no weapons policy for the building and surrounding property.  Please direct any questions to the Church Council.

Pop Tabs - We are trying to help some local school children at Irene King Elementary School reach their goal of collecting 1,000 pounds of pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald Children's Home.  If they collect that much, they will have their school's name placed on a leaf plaque inside one of the "local" houses.  Feel free to take one of the little cardboard Ronald McDonald collection boxes/houses and fill them up and bring them back to church.  We'll then get them to Irene King.  Tell your friends, family and co-workers to save them too!  Thanks!

The Preschool extends a big THANK YOU to those who donated toys to The Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation.  It is a wonderful way to help children have some fun times as they fight the ravages of cancer.

Excitement is mounting in the Preschool as they are having Christmas parties during their last hour of class today and tomorrow.  Things will be sure be quiet around here then when they are on Christmas Break until January 6, 2014.

On behalf of the Council, as we come closer to the end of another year, please consider giving an extra gift to the church general fund.  As you might imagine, our finances have taken quit a hit this year and any extra giving is definitely appreciated and helps us continue to ensure the ministries we all enjoy can continue.  Thank you, in advance, for your generosity!

Peace.

Manna cards have been received and sorted and can be picked up in the office tomorrow or at the church on Sunday. This was the largest Manna order we've ever placed, and we realized a profit of $222.44 on the order!  Thanks to all who placed a Manna order.

Special Help Needed:

1.  Our preschool is collecting new toys for The Treasure Chest Foundation.  All new toys should be dropped off to the church by this Sunday.  Toys will be delivered to the foundation, who will then deliver them to children and teens with cancer in some of the Chicagoland hospitals.  Questions?  Please contact our preschool staff at 815-886-4356.

2.  Our Matthew 25 Fund has been slowly dwindling down as we've helped people throughout the year.  Now, we have two families we are trying to assist.  One is an elderly woman recovering from a stroke, who is behind in her rent.  We are trying to raise $300 to help her.  Another family had a rather unexpected death in their family and are now trying to raise $5,000 to cover funeral costs.  Any money given through the Matthew 25 Fund is held in our Special Collections Savings Account and used to assist families in need.  Please consider giving during this holiday season.

3. Tell your friends and co-workers to save them too!  Thanks!

Manna Card Info:  The December Manna and/or gift box order forms are due this coming Sunday, or to the church office on Monday.  Manna gift cards are a great way to cut your holiday shopping list and allow the recipients to choose what they want so you don't have to fret about the size, color, or style, and they'll be able to take advantage of end-of-year sales!  Department, discount, drug and grocery store cards are also popular to be used when you wish, and there are many to choose from.  The Manna cards only cost what the face value of the card is.  There are no hidden charges, and Good Shepherd benefits from each card ordered.  If you have any questions about the Manna program, please call the office or talk with Carrie Worthington.  Thank you for considering placing a Manna order.

Advent Sunday Worship – Just a reminder that we will be offering ONE service on Sunday mornings in December at 9am.  The services will include Holy Communion and will offer songs and readings reflecting the Advent journey.  All are welcome!  Help spread the word about the time change.

WHAT'S HAPPENING AT GOOD SHEPHERD CHURCH

Good Afternoon!

Here is an advance What's Happening report with our December calendar attached.  If you are unable to join us for Thanksgiving Eve worship at 7:30 this evening, we hope that you have a blessed Thanksgiving, and are looking forward to the wondrous Advent season.

Some important worship news:  The Church Council, with support of the Worship Team, has decided to temporarily move to one service on Sunday mornings.  Beginning this Sunday, December 1, the service, which will be a blend of our traditional and praise-band led worship, will be held at 9:00am, followed by our Connection Café.  We will continue one service at least through January 5, when we will hold our Annual Budget Forum.  We know we may have difficult days in front of us and we wanted to offer a way for all of us to be there for each other in the midst of these times.  The Council felt the season of Advent was a good time for us to come together to strengthen one another and unite together as a church family.

Advent Worship:  Because of the way the calendar falls this year, there are four Sundays, but only three Wednesdays for Advent worship.  On these three Wednesdays, we are having a soup supper at 6:30pm that will be followed by an Advent program/worship time at 7:30pm.  We encourage you to take time out of the seasonal hustle and bustle to join us, and bring friends and/or family along.  It will be a time to share the real reason for the season.

Light in the Darkness Service:  Last year, we held our first "Light in the Darkness" service for those whom the holidays are a difficult time due to loss of loved ones, depression, etc.  We will once again hold this service on Sunday, December 22 at 4:00pm.  If you know someone who might benefit from attending, please invite them or let the church office know and we will send them an invitation.

Christmas Eve Worship:  As we have done in the past, there will be two worship services on Christmas Eve, at 7:00pm and 11:00pm; both will be candlelight services with traditional Christmas hymns and Holy Communion.

Manna Card Info:  The December Manna order form, as well as information about gift card boxes that Manna has available at the reasonable price of $2.25 each will be available in church on Sunday.  Note that FTD has added a new denomination of $25 and has increased the percentage we receive to 19%!  A FTD gift card would be a unique gift and allow the recipient to use the card whenever they felt like ordering flowers or any of the gift items that FTD offers.  And, FTD orders come with a "Good as Gold" 7-day satisfaction guarantee.

Our Preschool had a wonderful Thankful Dinner last week that was well attended and enjoyed by all.  Now Miss Marilyn and Miss Judith have transitioned to the Christmas décor and are ready to begin teaching the story of Jesus' birth in the manger.  We're looking forward to the stories about preschooler's comments that Marilyn and Judith share each year!

Ministry Night will be held at 7pm on December 10th.  All are welcome and encouraged to attend.  We are having a cookie-sharing along with the sharing of ministry team reports and plans.  Bring some treats and help plan what you'd like to see our church do in 2014.

Thank you!  A load of donated supplies was taken to Washington, Illinois this past Tuesday by a local Romeoville resident, David Bird.  Thanks to everyone who donated supplies.  Please know that we will continue to collect supplies and get them to the affected areas.  We will also be coordinating possible volunteer opportunities with Lutheran Social Services of Illinois, once these are in place.  For now, continued prayers for all affected are greatly appreciated.

While we try to be sure our church family is kept informed, sometimes we fall short.  Please, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, talk to one of our Church Council members, Pastor Suzanne, or call the church office.  We are here for you and would like to hear from you!

WHAT'S HAPPENING AT GOOD SHEPHERD CHURCH

Hello!

The excitement is mounting at the Preschool for their annual Thankful Dinner tonight, complete with magic entertainment.  What a fantastic way to teach the preschoolers to recognize all we have to be thankful for, as well as enjoying food and fellowship together.

Here's What's Happening around Good Shepherd . . . .

TONIGHT!  Thur. Nov. 21-Preschool Annual Thankful Dinner from 6:30 to 8pm.

Fri. Nov. 22-Crafter's Night at the church begins at 7pm.  Bring your project and join us!

Fri. Nov. 22-Friday Study meeting at the home of Laura Voruz begins at 7pm

Sat. Nov. 23-Harvest Saturday Community-wide Food Collection – worship at 11am

Sun. Nov. 24-Worship at 8 and/or 10 am with Connection Café between services

Wed. Nov. 27-Thanksgiving Eve Worship will begin at 7:30pm and be followed by our annual pie sharing fellowship.  Come join us and bring a pie to share.  All are welcome.

Thurs. Nov. 28 and Fri. Nov. 29-OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED for the Thanksgiving holiday

Is Crafter's Night something you might be interested in?  Bring your craft project and "drop in" to the Crafter's Night where we work on our projects and maybe do a bit of talking, too.  If you are interested in learning the art of scrapbooking, Carrie Worthington would be glad to share her expertise.  The next meeting will be held on Friday, Nov. 22 at the church beginning at 7pm.  Cost is none to join the fun!

Harvest Saturday is celebrating its 20th year of collecting food throughout our community for families in need.  A community worship service will begin at approximately 11am at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Romeoville; those who wish to volunteer should be at the church by 10:30am.  If you have questions about serving, please contact Bernadette Sedlacek at 815-886-4165, ext. 303 or contact the Romeoville Community Pantry.

Good Shepherd is serving as a tornado relief collection site.  At this time, the most pressing supplies needed are cleaning supplies including:  bleach, gloves, buckets, sponges, garbage bags, mops, towels, etc.  These can be dropped off at our church office tomorrow between 11:30am and 2:30pm, or call the office at 815-886-4354 to arrange another time to drop off your items…or have someone pick them up.  Please be praying for all those affected and know that we will work with our partners in Lutheran Disaster Response, Lutheran Social Services of Illinois, and local organizations to assist those in need.  Please respect the wishes of emergency workers and others by NOT going to the area to help at this time, as it is still not safe for people to be roaming in the area.

Thanksgiving Eve we will be having our Annual Thanksgiving Eve Worship on Nov.27th at 7:30pm at the church, followed by the sharing of pies or favorite desserts.  Come join us and share in the fellowship, reminiscing of Thanksgivings gone by, and what you are thankful for.  All are welcome!

LOOKING AHEAD -- Wednesday Advent Activities are planned for the three Wednesdays of Advent will begin on December 4th with a soup supper at 6:30pm, followed by some special Advent Programs at 7:30pm.  Plan to come and bring a friend, too, as we begin the journey toward the wonder of Jesus' birth.  Watch for more details as we approach the Advent season.

Recap from last Sunday:  Last Sunday, as we talked about representing Jesus, we heard His words predicting the future from the Gospel of Luke.  Though some today will claim we are in the "end times," only God knows when that will be.  For us, then, we live our lives in Jesus, following His words and trying to live out the things we called us to do; and when we are called to give testimony on His behalf, we should trust that He will give us the words to speak through the power of the Holy Spirit.  When we speak for Jesus, let it be with boldness and love.

Preview of this Sunday:  This Sunday we will commemorate Christ our King Sunday, remembering the royalty of Jesus and His Kingdoms here on earth and in heaven.  We will hear from God's Word about the "righteous branch of David" and from the thief on the cross asking Jesus to "remember me when you come into your kingdom."  Come and join us as we bow down before our King, Jesus.

I'm thankful to be Good Shepherd's Pastoral Assistant, and am wishing you all the blessings of peace, faith, hope, love, joy and health always.

Greetings!

How are you enjoying our new Central Standard Time?  It seems like every day I find another clock that has
n't been changed yet.  Thank goodness the cell phone changes automatically!

Before I forget, there are two things that are not happening this month.  Jan and George Sanchez have cancelled the 2nd Saturday Study for this month.  They'll resume in December.  Also, due to several of our Ministry Night participants being out of town, we will not be having a Ministry Night meeting in November.  Remember, in December we're planning to bring our favorite cookies to share at the December 10th Ministry Night meeting.  All are welcome to come join us then!

Vendor Fair Note- For those of you who weren't able to come to our Vendor's Fair last Saturday, Carrie has catalogs and information from the vendors for you to look over and possibly place an order.  There was some excellent merchandise offered and each vendor will donate a portion of your order to our church. It is a win-win situation for all!  Our Preschool has a few "smelly" item offerings, too.

Recap from last Sunday:  We had the opportunity to lift up our loved ones who have passed as we commemorated All Saints Sunday.  We also took time to remember our baptisms and the gift of being part of God's family - from new life in the waters of baptism to new life eternally in death.  Who are you remembering this week?

Preview of this Sunday:  This Sunday, we're delighted to welcome back Pastor Howard Buchholz as he brings us the message.  And, we're excited to have Cean Magosky, from our sister church in Lockport, providing our music, along with Lynne Hurdle.  Thanks, all!  Come, join us as we hear God's Word and share in His supper together.

As always, I'm wishing you peace, faith, hope, love, joy and health.  Keep warm!

WHAT'S HAPPENING AT GOOD SHEPHERD CHURCH

Good Day to You!

The 3 year old Preschool class went on their fall walk today after weather cancelled it last week.  Miss Marilyn and Miss Judith had to hunt a bit finding colorful autumn leaf colors though.  How are the trees looking in your neighborhood?

Fri. Nov. 8-Friday Study meets at Laura Voruz' house at 7pm

Sat. Nov. 9-2nd Saturday Bible Study at 6:30pm at the Sanchez' home

Sunday Book Study – Will meet this Sunday, 10/27 at 2pm at Pastor Suzanne's house.  We are currently studying, "Life Together," by Dietrick Boenhoeffer.  It's led to some really good discussions...join us.  All are welcome!  We start with a light meal and then discussion.

Wednesday Bible Study - Join us every Wednesday, as we continue our study on the New Testament book of Romans.  Come at 6:30pm for supper, followed by our study at 7.  We conclude with communion around 8:30pm.  Bring your Bible, a side dish to share, and an open mind for learning and sharing.  All ages welcome!  Invite a friend, too.  This study takes place at the church.

A Holiday Vendor Fair is coming to Good Shepherd!  Last year's fair was such a great experience we are once again planning another for Saturday, November 2 from 10am to 4pm.  Our list of vendors has grown, but we would welcome more!  If you know someone who might be interested in selling at the Fair, please get flyers from Carrie Worthington or the church office, and then make plans to shop for your holiday gift needs as well!  There will be concessions, hot dogs, chips and pop, drawings, prizes and specials.  I heard a rumor that the Preschool has some special items they're going to be selling too.  Mark your calendar now to come and bring others too.  There is sure to be something for everyone.

Recap from last Sunday:  Last Sunday, our theme was, "Persistence."  We heard the story of the persistent widow and were reminded by Jesus of how important it is to be in constant prayer and to never give up.  Jesus challenged the disciples then, as he challenges us now, through his questions - "When I return, how many will I find who have faith?"  Do you allow your circumstances to determine your faith and trust in God?  As Dr. King said, "Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase."  Are you taking that first step or still standing on the landing?

Preview of this Sunday:  This Sunday, we'll be joining with Lutherans throughout the world in celebrating Reformation Sunday.  We'll hear about Martin Luther, the great Reformer, and share some of the Scriptures that changed his life and led him to a new relationship with and understanding of God.  Join us and bring a friend!

Look for the November calendar in church this Sunday, as well as the Manna order forms.  Also, the Preschool has some cookie dough available for purchase in case you didn't order or need more.  Our new Church Directory is available, too!  Please call the office (815-886-4354) to let me know if any corrections are needed in your listing.  As always, I'm wishing you peace, faith, hope, love, joy and health.

Recap of last Sunday:  Last Sunday was about faith and healing.  We heard the Old Testament story of the healing of Naaman and the Gospel story of the healing of the 10 lepers from Luke 17.  We talked about the difference between being healed and being made well.  Jesus' words to the leper, who returned to him after being healed, "Your faith has made you well," led us to think about how we can be physically healed but emotionally and spiritually unwell and, how we can be spiritually well but physically ailing.  We also thought about the characters in each of the stories - the young, servant girl, the underlings of Naaman, etc. - and how they helped lead others to healing.  Pastor encouraged us to think about ourselves as characters in the stories of other's lives and how we might help lead them to a place of healing - in Jesus.

Preview of this Sunday:  This Sunday, our theme is "Persistence."  We'll hear the story of a persistent widow, along with advice from Paul to Timothy about being faithful to what he's been taught and being persistent in preaching the word.  We'll think about what persistence really means and how it fits into our stories of faith and our journeys with Jesus.

As always, I'm wishing you peace, faith, hope, love, joy and health.  Enjoy the sunshine that's heading our way, and pray for good weather for the CROP Walk Sunday!

Sermon Recap: Our theme was "The Power of Love and Forgiveness."  We talked about forgiving one another and how difficult this can sometimes be.  We talked about how, as servants of Jesus, love and forgiving others is part of our "duty."  Hearing Jesus' words in Luke reminded us of this and challenged us beyond ourselves.  Pastor shared some quotes about forgiveness from the Amish Grace book and encouraged us to be praying about those places in our lives where we most need forgiveness.

Sermon Preview: Our theme this week is, "Faith and Healing."  We'll hear several stories of healing, including the Gospel story of the healing of the 10 lepers.  We'll think about how our faith is connected to our healing, if it is at all.  And we'll talk about what healing looks like and feels like, as it is not always what we think of.  Need some healing in your life?  Know someone who does?  Join us and be sure to bring them too.

As always, I'm wishing you peace, faith, hope, love, joy and health.  Enjoy the sunshine!

WHAT'S HAPPENING AT GOOD SHEPHERD CHURCH

Hello!

Latest construction alert!  New curbs have been poured on Alexander and Townhall Drive.  As a result, we haven't been able to get into our parking lot for the past two days and we have been bringing the preschoolers in through the back door by the Dairy Queen parking lot.  Wednesday Study was cancelled last night because Anderson's Chapel wasn't able to share their lot as they have been graciously doing for us.  Hopefully the rain doesn't delay our getting access by Sunday.

Here's What's Happening around Good Shepherd . . . .

Fri. Oct. 4-Crafter's Night at church begins at 7pm.  Bring your projects and join the fun!

Fri. Oct. 4-Friday Study meets at the home of Laura Voruz at 7pm

Sun. Oct. 6- Worship at 8 and/or 10am with Connection Café between services

Sun. Oct. 6-Manna orders are due today for delivery next Sunday

Tues. Oct. 8-Ministry Night at 7pm at the church.  All are welcome to hear and help with Ministry planning.

Wed. Oct. 9- Wednesday Bible Study starts at 6:30pm with a light dinner (Mexican lasagna), followed by study, then Holy Communion at 8:30pm.  All are welcome.

Thur. Oct. 10-FLY Lady meets at the home of Lydia Faber at 7pm.  All ladies are welcome!

Fri. Oct. 11-Friday Study meets at 7pm at the home of Laura Voruz

Sat. Oct. 12-2nd Saturday Study (formerly the 3rd Monday Study) meets at 6pm at the home of George and Janice Sanchez

Sun. Oct. 13-Worship at 8 and/or 10am with Connection Café between services

Manna card order forms for October are due on Sunday.  Look over the list and see if there isn't something you'd like to purchase for gifting or even any every day purchases you currently make with cash.  The possibilities are endless and you get full face value without any service fees added.  Please ask Carrie Worthington if you would like further information regarding the Manna program, or call the church office.  We'd certainly appreciate your participation!

Wednesday Bible Study - Join us every Wednesday, as we continue our 12-week study on the New Testament book of Romans.  Come at 6:30pm for supper, followed by our study at 7.  We conclude with communion around 8:30pm.  Bring your Bible, a side dish to share, and an open mind for learning and sharing.  All ages welcome!  Invite a friend, too.  This study takes place at the church.

Bolingbrook/Romeoville CROP Walk News- Thanks to Art Arellano for continuing to provide us with updates and information on this year's CROP Walk to fight hunger.  The walk is quickly approaching - it takes place on Sunday, October 20 at 1pm.  Be on the lookout for more info and register now to walk and raise money for the cause!

A Holiday Vendor Fair is coming to Good Shepherd on Saturday, November 2nd.  Last year's fair was such a great experience we've decided to do it again this year!  So far there are 3 vendors that are scheduled to participate.  Do you know of anyone who might be interested in selling?  Please get flyers from Carrie Worthington or the church office and make plans to shop for your holiday gift needs there!

Sermon Recap:  Our theme from last Sunday was "You've Been Warned."  We heard the story of the the Rich Man and Lazarus from Luke and were reminded by all of our readings of how many times we have been warned about doing the right thing, by God's standards.  We also talked again about how we use our money – our intent – and why we should trust in God, not our "wealth."  Good discussions.

Sermon Preview:  This week, our theme is, "The Power of Love and Forgiveness" and, using Jesus' words from the Gospel of Luke and Paul's words from 2 Timothy, we'll talk about love and forgiveness; how these two ideas relate to one another and how they play a very important role in the lives of believers like us.  We'll also be challenged to think about the places of unforgiveness in our own lives and how we can, with Jesus' help, become more forgiving despite all circumstances.  This is a tough subject for many people so we're sure to have lots of conversation.  Join us!

It is hard to believe that Tuesday was October 1st.  The October calendar is ready for you to get in church on Sunday, so be sure to get yours!

Remember to call the office whenever there is anything you have questions about or if you need help with anything.  We're here for you, or will get back to you if you leave a message.  As always, I'm wishing you peace, faith, hope, love, joy and health.
