Sunday, 3/24 – 9:00a – Palm Sunday Worship with brunch to follow

Recap from last Sunday:  On the second Sunday of Lent, we talked about being citizens of heaven living in this world; of being in, but not of, this world.  Using Paul's words from Philippians 3:17-4:1, we talked about the challenges of living in this in-between place and how we need to balance our focus on being citizens of heaven with our service to this world in which we live now.  Pastor Suzanne reminded us that the season of Lent offers an opportunity for self-reflection and she encouraged us to think about how we see ourselves and our place in this world, even as we think about our lives in heaven.

Preview of this Sunday:  This Sunday, we'll be hearing several Scriptures including those that talk about finding life, standing strong even in the midst of temptation, and what it means to be fruitful…and is there a timeline for fruitfulness.  We hope you'll join us for another lively discussion on both the Old and New Testaments as we delve deeper into God's Word together.  All are welcome!

We are working on the Rod and Staff newsletter for you to get in church on Sunday.  In the meantime, please feel free to call the office if you need any information.  We're here to help and will be glad to answer your questions or hear your concerns.  I'm wishing you peace, faith, hope, love, joy, and health always.

Mark your calendars!  The Learning Team, along with Pastor Suzanne, will be holding two meetings to discuss their upcoming program, "Making Disciples."  The meetings will be held Monday, March 4 at 7:00pm or Thursday, March 7 at 7pm.  Those interested in the program need only attend one meeting.  This program is one that we've used for our Confirmation youth and it has been discussed for many years that we bring it to the adults in the church too.  So, we're finally doing it.  The program will kick off in May.  We think this is a great way for us to "dig deeper" into the gifts and talents of our congregation.  Please come to one of these informational meetings.  Have questions?  Please join us.

Recap from last Sunday:  On the first Sunday of Lent, we had a discussion of the temptation of Jesus from the Gospel of Luke, as well as hearing from Paul's letter to the Romans.  We talked about how we are tempted, how we can fight temptations through reading God's Word, being in fellowship with other believers for support, prayer, etc.  We also talked about how we are saved and why both "believing in your heart and confessing with your mouth" are important for our faith journeys.  Pastor challenged us, as we began the season of Lent, to begin a time of inner reflection, thinking about the things that have become a barrier between us and God.  Unlike the two prior weeks, this week, she challenged us to look at our own hearts and determine what it is that we believe and how our beliefs can help us in our fight against the temptations of our lives.

Preview of this Sunday:  We'll be looking at Jesus' words about grieving over Jerusalem, along with his accomplishing his purpose.  We'll also look at more words from the apostle, Paul, this time from the book of Philippians.  We'll think about what it means to be "citizens of heaven" and how we can look toward heaven while still making a difference here on earth.  Join us!  All are welcome!

Please feel free to call the office if you need any further information.  We're here to help and will be glad to answer your questions or hear your concerns.  I'm wishing you peace, faith, hope, love, joy, and health always.  I'm also praying we don't get hit by a big snowstorm overnight!

Our first Winter Vendor's Fair, held last Saturday, was a total success and a good time was had by the vendors and shoppers as well.  Thanks go to Carrie for putting this event together!

Recap of last Sunday:  Our theme was, "Shine On."  Using the story of Jesus' Transfiguration and Paul's words from 2 Corinthians 3-4, we talked about how we are called to be a reflection of Jesus, shining his love and grace in the world.  Our challenge was to find one person this week with whom we could share our story of transformation (metamorpho) through the power of God, remembering that it is not about us, it is about what God is doing in and through us.  How's your challenge going?

Preview of this Sunday:  For our first Sunday of Lent, we'll hear the story of Jesus' temptation in the wilderness and also Paul's words about being saved.  It's sure to be another lively discussion.  Be sure to join us.  Remember, if you miss a Sunday, you can get a CD of our 10am service, including the message...for FREE!

One final note—I am attaching information about PRS Research who called the office looking for Romeoville consumers to give their ideas and opinions and will pay $50 for 15-20 minutes of participation.  They are not selling anything and are targeting stay at home moms or anyone 18 to 54 years of age.  I'm not sure if you'd be interested, but this could be a way of earning a few dollars.

I'm wishing you peace, faith, hope, love, joy, and health always.  Happy Valentine's Day!

Summer Music and Arts Event - We had a great first meeting last week for our summer music and arts event.  The date of the event is Saturday, June 29.  The location will be determined soon.  Money raised at this event will benefit the victims of Hurricane Sandy, particularly in the New York area, where Pastor Suzanne visited last month.  We plan to have an arts fair, specifically inviting young artists in our community to share their talents.  We also plan on having several bands playing throughout the afternoon.  And, we are hoping to bring a "big" or more-recognizable name for the evening portion of the event, and a presentation from victims of the storm.  If you know of any local bands that might be interested in performing, for little to no cost, please contact Pastor Suzanne or Steve Hurdle ASAP.  Our next planning meetings for this event will be on Saturday, March 2 and April 6 at noon.  If you have non-church friends who might be interested in volunteering at this event, please invite them to attend the meeting too.  We'll need lots of help and welcome all!  We're working on a name for the event so send your ideas to Pastor Suzanne or, better yet, bring them to our next meeting.

2013 Congregation Budget Challenge - As Lydia reminded us last Sunday at the 10a service, we voted at our Annual Congregational Meeting to pass a 2013 budget that includes a $42,545 "congregation challenge."  If each family in the church gives approximately $65 more per month than their pledged amount or any other offerings given, we can meet this challenge.  Lydia gave her testimony of how she is now cleaning a friend's house to meet her part of the challenge, the Council would love to hear other ideas of ways people are helping us meet this challenge.  Please email your ideas to Pastor Suzanne and/or feel free to share them in worship.  Together, we can meet and perhaps exceed the amount needed for our challenge!  God is good...all the time!

News from other ELCA congregations - We are invited to attend a special anniversary worship service at Shepherd of the Hill in Lockport next Sunday at 4:00pm.  The worship service will be a "blues" service and will be a celebration of the first anniversary of the Lockport Resource Center, a great community organization providing assistance to those in need through the funds of a thrift store.  Shepherd of the Hill is located on Route 7 (Renwick Road), about 3 miles east of downtown Lockport.  For more information, check out this link on Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/events/115673745273957/?fref=ts.

Recap of last Sunday:  Last week, our theme was, "Speaking of Love."  Using texts from both Jeremiah and 1 Corinthians, we had an extended discussion on the "love chapter," 1 Corinthians 13.  We talked about what love is and what love is not.  We talked about how important it is, in any relationship, to work toward what love is - patient, kind, lasting, etc.  And, when we have times in our relationships when we are in what love is not - jealous, boastful, rude, etc. - we need to ask for God's help in moving back to patience, kindness, etc.  Pastor Suzanne also reminded us that, whether we know it or not and whether it is intentional or not, every day we speak of love - in our words and our actions.  Her challenge to us for this week was to be aware of how we speak of love - in our words and our actions.  How is your challenge going?

Preview of this Sunday:  This week, our theme will be, "Shine On."  We will hear the story of Jesus' transfiguration and we'll think about how we, as His followers, are called to shine His love, grace, and mercy into the world; how we are to be "mirrors brightly reflecting the glory of the Lord."  We hope you'll join us for another lively discussion.  Invite a friend to join you too.

We are moving ahead with putting together a church directory.  Please let us know what information you want shown (home addresses, home and/or cell phone numbers, email addresses, birth dates and anniversary dates) and get us a picture to be included--or we can take one at church.  Thanks in advance for your help!

I'm going to be in the office earlier tomorrow (from 9am to noon) in order to head to Indiana afterward.  So, please call or email me early if I can help with anything.  As always, I'm wishing you peace, faith, hope, love, joy, and health always.

weekly sermon challenge

Weekly sermon challenge - Be aware of how you are "speaking of love" this week - in your words and you actions.  And remember, go where God leads you to go and say what God tells you to say.  He is with you so don't be afraid or worried about what other people think of you.
