Matthew 25 "Mooved by Eggsample" Fundraiser - Carrie Worthington and Pastor Suzanne are finalizing the special "props" we'll be using for this fundraiser. As a reminder, you'll be invited to "pin a spot" on our cow (coming soon to church) or "drop an egg" in the basket. Spots are $8 each and will provide 2 pantry families with a gallon of milk and a carton of eggs; eggs are $4 each and will provide 1 pantry family with milk and eggs. We'll soon be looking for people to shop for our dairy items, deliver them to the pantry on give-out days, etc. If you are interested in helping with this, please contact Carrie or Pastor Suzanne. Thanks! And thanks to Roy J for coming up with our great slogan!
"Telling Amy's Story" - This Saturday, we'll have a special opportunity to host community members as we partner with Guardian Angel Community Services. At 2:00pm, in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Month, they'll be showing a movie, "Telling Amy's Story," at our church. We are looking for people to provide cookies and other small desserts for our guests. If you can help, please contact Renea in the church office via email or the office number - 815-886-4354. Or, just bring your dessert donations to church on Saturday. We hope some of you will also come to the movie screening and help us host this event...just another opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus.
Worship Outreach - This Sunday, at 6:00pm, Pastor Suzanne and several others from the congregation will be going to Joliet Jobs Corp (in Joliet) to share a meal and worship service with some of their lgbt youth. Joliet Jobs Corp assists youth, ages 16-22, with job training and other life skills development. We believe God has opened up a special opportunity here for us to partner with them and we're hopeful that the congregation will jump on board and be there for these youth...they are very excited about us coming. If you're able to join us, please be in touch with Pastor Suzanne. We'll either car pool together or meet at the facility. We are also going to be providing desserts. Pastor Suzanne has the likes/dislikes of the youth for food choices so, if you'd like to help with that, let her know. Thanks!
Growth Team Meeting - On Tuesday, October 30 at 7:00p, the Council will host an inaugural meeting for the Growth Team. This new team comes out of our various discussions at our most recent Special Congregational Meetings. Anyone interested in growing our church - financially, spiritually, numerically, etc. - is invited and encouraged to join us. This first meeting will help us discern the next direction for the team and those interested.
Estate Sale Help - Jan Sanchez and Pastor Suzanne are coordinating an estate sale to help our sister in Christ, Darlene. A sign-up was provided last Sunday at church. If you weren't there or you missed it, please sign up this week. Or, feel free to contact Jan or Pastor Suzanne. Set up for the sale will begin at 4:00pm on Friday, November 2. The sale will run on Saturday, November 3 from 9am-4pm; Sunday, November 4 from noon-5pm; Monday, November 5 from 10am-4pm. Clean-up from the sale (and possibly delivery of non-sold items) will be on Tuesday, November 6, starting at 1:00pm. Thanks, in advance, for helping us assist Darlene. She is truly grateful for all that the congregation is doing to help her.
Recap of last Sunday's message: Last Sunday, our theme was, "What Holds Us Back?" Using the story of the rich young man and Jesus, Pastor Suzanne invited us, okay challenged us, to think about what holds us back from fully following Jesus. For some of us it might be our wealth, or our possessions, or our jobs, or our families, or our habits, or our attitudes, or perhaps something else. She challenged us to figure out what holds us back and then to decide what to do about it. Are we going to be like the rich young man and walk away from Jesus because we just can't give it up, or are we willing to give up whatever we need to in order to walk toward, and with, Jesus?
Preview of this Sunday's message: This week, our theme will be, "Be a Servant." Using Jesus' words from the Gospel of Mark, along with Bible readings from Isaiah and Hebrews, we'll talk about what it means to be a servant of God; we'll think about how our attitude in serving is just as important as our physical act of serving; we'll see Jesus' example of being a servant and challenge ourselves to become more and more like him in our daily walks. Join us...and invite a friend too!
Next Sunday, October 28, we are planning to have the November Rod and Staff newsletter ready to give you at church. In the newsletter, we'll include another reminder about the time change which will take place the following Sunday, November 4. Where has this year gone?
Here's wishing you all peace, hope, joy, health, and love always. Enjoy our changeable fall weather!
Renea Horn Johnson
Pastoral Assistant
